LAKE GENEVA — Jeni Diehl of Lake Geneva felt helpless watching the devastation in Joplin, Mo. after a tornado ripped through the city May 22, 2011, killing 139 people and leveling neighborhoods as far as the eye could see.
Her despair only lasted until the weekend, and in eight hours, Diehl and her husband Derek, owners of Lake Geneva’s semi-pro football team the Generals, along with three team members, pulled together a trip to Joplin to help out. STORY and PHOTOS
Deputy Patrick Bolton is believed to be the only full-time deputy who lost his life in the line of duty with the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office. He was electrocuted Aug. 26, 1966 at the age of 31 while investigating a car accident. The sheriff’s office is renaming a road in his honor … more.

As the closing for the sale of Delavan’s Lake Lawn Resort drags on, a new bidder has emerged with an interest in purchasing and re-opening the resort that closed late last year after foreclosure.
In today’s Gazette, Ann Marie Ames reports that Lake Geneva developer Todd Wilkins is expected to make a bid later this week.

ELKHORN — Sgt. Matthew Hermanson is being remembered for his vibrant personality, exuberant smile and quick witted humor, according to a statement released Wednesday by his family.
Hermanson, 22, whose wife Rachel is an Elkhorn Area High School graduate, died April 28, 2011 in Afghanistan from enemy small-arms fire.
The couple was married May 8, 2010 at Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay in a ceremony conducted by Rachel Hermanson’s father, the Rev. Donald Younger of Lake Geneva … CONT

WASHINGTON — Osama bin Laden, who for nearly 10 years has been the United States’ most wanted man, is dead, Pres. Barack Obama announced Sunday night.
In a televised announcement about 10:30 p.m., from the East Room of the White House, Obama confirmed that the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks had been killed today in Pakistan.
“Tonight, I can report the United States has concluded an operation that has killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaida,” Obama said.
Obama said intelligence had determined bin Laden was in a compound deep inside Pakistan.
“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against the compound,” Obama said.
The operation was undertaken by what Obama referred to as a small team of Americans.
“After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body,” Obama said. CONTINUED
